RED ROPE

Red Rope, an anti-trafficking NGO, working on cases of international human trafficking in India.

The Red Rope Movement was founded by a young independent woman who found her calling to free India from the harsh reality of human trafficking. She left everything behind in July 2019 and chose to become a voice for the thousands of victims who cannot speak for themselves, and aims to be a ray of light when the victims have lost all hope.

Red Rope believes that just like a weed has to be pulled out from the root, the issue of Human Trafficking in the same manner has to be pulled out form the root and hence it aims to develop a disruptive solution to the very root cause of Human Trafficking in India.

Magali Rapson is a Human Trafficking Prevention Specialist and runs the Delhi branch. She will talk briefly about Red Rope at our event. Our aim today is to raise funds to cover the cost the cost of repatriating back to their home country a person who has been held in India against their will.

In 2006, Dr Kunnacherry founded another NGO Family Health and Education (FHE) along with some philanthropic friends in Delhi Muskaan is an after school program the centre is situated in Hauz Khas Village. It is  a project of FHE Various Projects and activities are organised through Muskaan aimed at improving the living conditions of the residents of the slums of Hauz Khas Village with special focus on women and children such as afternoon school for the underprivileged girls of ages 5-15, providing nutritional meals, books and notebooks, stationery, clothes and shoes for both summer and winter to the girls attending the afternoon school, classes on English speaking, health and hygiene, personality development, etiquette and proper behaviour etc. for the girls, tailoring classes for older girls and mothers, classes on balanced diet and cooking of nutritional meals, computer classes for girls, and Art and Craft classes for the girls from time to time.

Dr Kunnacherry has contributed greatly to the lives of the inhabitants of the slums of Hauz Khas Village through Project Muskaan. It was started in 2008 as an “afterschool program” for the daughters of domestic workers who were not attending school. FHE began by helping them enrol in local MCD schools and taking afternoon classes to help them with their school syllabuses and homework as their parents are illiterate and could not help them at home. At the time only 10% the girl children of Hauz Khas Village were attending school.  It has increased to 95 % now. After starting with 10 girls and a teacher in a single room, Dr Kunnacherry has greatly expanded the Muskaan Project. At present, it caters to around 70 girls and there are 5 teachers with 5 rooms being used. Students from class 1 to 10 from the ages 5-15 are taught there. They also have English speaking classes conducted by volunteers from English speaking countries.

Around 474 students have benefitted from the project so far. One of the major achievements in the last two years has been all its students passing the board examinations. All the students at Muskaan have passed with good marks in school all these 15 years. Even the Principals’ of MCD schools in Hauz Khas Village and Green Park have recognised this. 10 students passed college degree and 5 of them are at the college.

SPREAD A SMILE

Provided funding to purchase 125 uniforms, shoes, back packs and kitchen equipment. Also paid for transportation for the Spread a Smile children to their Christmas Party.

Sangita Mehra gave up her successful business as a fashion designer to dedicate all her time to ‘Spread A Smile – India’. An initiative of Mehrasons Jewellers Charitable Trust, Sangita co-founded the initiative in 2005, along with her older son, Aashray, as a vehicle to help the children living and begging in the streets of New Delhi, India. Lacking any mentorship, these children are propelled into the worlds of thievery, drugs and violence, which Sangita aims to rectify by introducing a much-needed maternal love into their lives. At Spread a Smile – India, she creates the environment of an extended family to motivate the children find purpose in their lives and give up their vices. A primary objective of Spread a Smile – India is to foster a rudimentary knowledge of academics to allow the children to enroll in mainstream public schools. She also aims to empower the children with their rights against abuse and holds routine workshops to equip them with the means they require for a healthy and secure future. She is in the process of setting up a vocational centre aimed at helping women and children to pursue careers, thereby breaking out of the poverty cycle.

ACCESS TO EDUCATION

ANZA provided funding to assist 23 students; 14 are just beginning their BA programs, 6 are in year 2 or 3 of a BA program, and 3 are in a Master’s Degree program. Six of the students are female (and they are some impressive, well-spoken young women!) The program is run by the American Embassy School.

Access to Education provides support for students from the Vivekananda community who wish to pursue higher education by reimbursing the cost of their fees following successful completion of their course. Students attend a variety of schools – the School of Open Learning, private universities and trade-specific training programs are among the most popular – and some carry on to obtain their Master’s degree. Following submission of a detailed application, proof of registration, tuition information, and successful grades from the previous semester, students participate in an interview with committee members. In return, we ask students to help support and encourage younger students to continue their studies. In the future, we hope to add mentoring and more non-financial support to the program.
